Ariane Mariane – Textile Artist

Creator of colors and textures – maker of outstanding and unique pieces & hatter with a pinch of fantasy

With a wide-ranging curiosity for all artistic techniques and for textile art in particular, Ariane Mariane freely combines textile felting with graphic art elements, painting, embroidery, digital painting, collage, printing… The list goes on!

The artist describes her process as involuntary, destructured and chaotic, “My workshop is my kingdom where I have gathered fabric, wool fibers, pigments, paper and discoveries of all sorts.  This is where I travel to imaginary countries, live adventures, and often bring back treasures.” For Ariane Mariane, the best creations “just happen”, and she quotes Pablo Picasso: “Inspiration exists, but it must find you working.”

In the universe that is Ariane Mariane, clothing and accessories intermingle with mural and sculptural works of art.

“I don’t see the difference between an article of clothing and a painting,” she explains with an impish smile.  “My research is always pictorial, with a combination of colors, forms and material.  I absolutely love the idea of having art being part of everyday life.  Nothing is more satisfying for me than to brighten up daily living with creations that are highly artistic.”

Making art to brighten up daily life

That is why this outstanding artist creates clothings that are works of fine art. Her art vest are wearable paintings. Each side is worked out in a pictorial way. Both surfaces are composed individually, making the art vest réversible. The artist wants us to get involved with her art. She invites us to play with her work. The art vest can be draped in many fashionable ways and also be worn upside-down. This way the artistic garment becomes a bolero vest with a spectacular collar.

In Ariane Marian’s world hats and bags are sculptures. If we can’t take them out, they are pretty in our home decor, too. They can be exposed on a wall a a shell as examples of contemporary fiber art.

The artist has a growing international clientele who supports this approach.  Captivated by the idea of wearing a work of art as a colorful touch to their day-to-day life, the public appreciates the quality, humor and originality of her creations.

Ariane Mariane’s work is regularly shown in France and in international circles.  The creator was the guest of honor at the French exposition “Carrefour du patchwork”  in Sainte Marie au Mines in 2010.  In 2015, her hat entitled “Blue Dots” won the first prize in the international hat contest at the Caussade Estivales (south of France), known for their world famous hat-gathering festivities.  Then in 2016 the Cultural Center “Anatole France” in Clermont Ferrand dedicated a retrospective on her work in collaboration with textile artist Maria Friese.

Creations by Ariane Mariane can be found in several books on textile art:

  • Felt Passion
  • Worldwide Colors of Felt
  • Artistry in Fiber, Vol 3: Wearable Art

The artist has also collaborated on a book dealing with felting techniques:

“Laine feutrée – premières leçons” in the “Le temps approvisionné” Collection.

It is with great enthusiasm that the artist shares her know-how in conferences and in demonstrations of this artistic craft. She also organizes courses in her workshop located in the western suburbs of Paris.
